The Moore Transformed: A Miami Landmark Reborn
Miami's architectural heritage continues to surprise and delight. The latest revival sees The Moore, a historic 1922 furniture factory designed by David P Davis, undergoing a stunning transformation by Design District developer Craig Robins.
The Moore's past brush with Art Basel Miami Beach left a lasting mark. Robins commissioned the visionary architect Zaha Hadid to create "Elastika," a striking 433-square-meter, white web sculpture that gracefully spans the building's four-story atrium. This contemporary artwork, playing against the Art Deco railings, draws the eye upwards and breathes new life into the landmark.
While "Elastika" remains, the building has reopened with a new chapter. WoodHouse, the hospitality developer, leads the charge with "Elastika," a modern American restaurant helmed by Chef Joe Anthony. Nestled on the ground floor beneath the iconic sculpture, this restaurant serves as the first piece of a larger vision – The Moore Miami.
Encompassing a vast 8,400-square-meter space, The Moore Miami will eventually incorporate a neighboring structure, transforming the corner of NE 40th Street and NE 2nd Avenue into a multi-faceted destination. This exciting project will include a private members' club, a boutique hotel, retail space, and exhibition areas.
"Elastika" the restaurant sets the stage with a curated experience. Brazilian designer Sossego's furniture complements a collection of contemporary art, meticulously chosen by Miami art advisor Monica Kalpakian. The design agency ICrave has crafted the interiors, featuring an 18-seat bar, plush velvet banquettes, and a welcoming lounge area perfect for coffee or cocktails.
‘Our vision for Elastika extends beyond the menu,’ says WoodHouse founder Brady Wood. ‘We’ve transformed the first floor of The Moore into the lobby of the Miami Design District — an inviting destination where people can gather, dine and enjoy the landmark building and Zaha Hadid’s iconic sculpture.’
The much-anticipated club and hotel, designed by Studio Collective, are slated to open in autumn 2024, adding another layer to The Moore Miami's captivating story.
