SOBE SEA, LLC, the entity behind the Ritz-Carlton South Beach and Sagamore Hotel South Beach, is embarking on a transformative project for the 100 block of Lincoln Road and its beachwalk entrance, thanks to a $4.85 million grant from the state of Florida. This funding complements an equal contribution from the City of Miami Beach and $4 million from the hoteliers' private coffers, aiming to rejuvenate this key area with street redesigns, an Art Walk, a public beach park, and other significant enhancements. The initiative enjoys the backing of City of Miami Beach Commissioner Alex Fernandez and the families of Kanavos, Lowenstein, and Ben Josef.
The project, approved by the Florida Legislature and Governor Ron DeSantis, focuses on improving traffic flow and pedestrian safety through a comprehensive street redesign. This plan also revives Morris Lapidus' unrealized vision with the inclusion of a “Lapidus Arch,” signaling a broader ambition to connect Lincoln Road from bay to ocean.
Moreover, SOBE SEA, supported by Commissioner Fernandez, is looking to extend these improvements to the 200 and 300 blocks of Lincoln Road, aiming for a pedestrian-friendly overhaul up to Washington Avenue. Peter Kanavos of SOBE SEA highlights the critical role of community support in advancing these plans, from business operators to local residents and property owners.
With the Historic Preservation Board's endorsement, the project's leaders plan to present a final development agreement to the City Commission in early summer 2024. Following approval, a Request for Proposals will be issued to commence construction. This initiative is part of a larger vision to counteract crime and degradation along Lincoln Road, aiming to revitalize Miami Beach's urban core.
This effort is just a segment of a broader wave of investment transforming Miami Beach, which includes new luxury residences, Class A office spaces, and a $60 million City-led retail district upgrade known as the James Corner plan. The investments by the Ritz-Carlton and Sagamore Hotel owners reflect a commitment not only to their guests but to enhancing the overall visitor experience to Miami Beach, signaling a bright future for the area’s urban landscape.
